5 Strategies for Communication in the first Days of Class

Establishing clear and consistent communication can encourage student engagement, foster interest in course material, and encourage retention. 

  1. Establish expectations for communication from the beginning of the class. 

  2. Develop a communication plan for the course.

  3. Develop consistent communication timeline(s) for the course. 

  4. Provide a clear overview that shows students how to

    1. Locate course materials

    2. Find assignments

    3. Check assignment due dates

    4. Submit assignments 

  5. Explain the methods of learning-assessment communication–how and when students will receive responses on their assignments.
