Developing Supportive Learning Environments for Students

Developing a supportive learning environment can encourage a student growth mindset in your courses.

  1. Ensure that feedback is learning oriented. Feedback on learning assessments should allow for continued growth and development. How can students continue to improve? What might students do different on future learning assessments?

  2. Provide early feedback on a meaningful assignment or learning assessment.

  3. Design collaborative opportunities for peer-to-peer learning early in the course.

  4. Schedule a check-in early (week two or three) in advance of 4th-week progress reports to assess student progress.

  5. Address students by their preferred name and pronouns in the course.

Email the Faculty Center for Teaching & Learning (FCT&L) fctl@eku.edu for more information or schedule a consultation. Department and program workshops are available.
